Thank you menno for bringing this up.
36And He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one.
Pro-military have been using this verse to justify self protection by carrying around guns and for the military.
I would like to offer my reasoning from different angle.
There is no evidence any disciple protected themselves and killed anyone. They had plenty of opportunity to kill because they were surrounded by enemies who wanted them dead all the time.
Above reason is very simple but most of us make the Scripture more complicated than it actually is.

I am in agreement with your views as to the military, & the use of weapons by those proffesing to be christians. There is the perfect example of this the night before Jesus execution in the following quote from Matt.26;51-56;
51 Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.
52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place, for all those who take the sword will die by the sword.
53 Or do you think that I couldn't ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must be so?"
55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and you didn't arrest me.
56 But all this has happened, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples left him, and fled.
If you note V's 54, 56, Jesus gave the reason for this was to fulfill the OT prophets. V52 shows that "those who take the sword, will die by the sword"....not the thing for true christians to be involed in. (warfare of any kind)

Pro military Christians are misrepresenting Jesus big time. It is a grave sin to misrepresent the way they approve of the military because it is a blood guilt.
BTW, why did Jesus say to buy a sword to His disiples?

Your original post on this thread was taken from Luke 22;36, the next verse (37) gives us the answer. It has a chain reference back to Isa.53;12,
"12 I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier,
because he exposed himself to death.
He was counted among the rebels.
He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels."
This verse in Isaiah, had to be fulfilled in Jesus before his death.
I can post more information if you wish.
