Matthew 5:32
But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.[/quote]

Matthew 19:8
Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.

1 Corinthians 7:11
But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

1 Corinthians 7:12
To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.

1 Corinthians 7:13
And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him.

Hi joyful,
I think it is a major mistake to quote from the NIV, especially on this topic since that cheap paraphrase shamelessly declares that a man can divorce his wife for adultery (marital unfaithfulness).
The KJV correctly translates for "fornication".
There is a major difference between the two words.
In the Jewish biblical culture, a man could "divorce' his "wife" BEFORE he married her!!
Remember what Joseph almost did because he thought Mary had fornicated? If not for the angel that informed him of how she became pregnant, he would have had no reason to not "divorce" her for fornication.

This strange PREMARITAL divorce has led many to deduce that since Jesus refers to a man divorcing his wife for fornication, and since a "wife" HAS to mean they are married, the fornication she commits HAS to be adultery. The conclusion is a mistake from both assumptions:
The Hebrew culture based on the bible used the words wife and divorce to relate to their cultural PREMARITAL situation.
We would say husband and wife to be, they simply called them husband and wife.
We would say break the engagement for her fornication, they would say divorce her for her fornication.

Ok,

I take your word. But NIV still says you cannot remarry unless you become widow or widower. So it is not that bad.

What I am protesting is that mainstream churches approve of remarriage without their spouses dead. It is so disgraceful.
